AGING BABY BOOMERS HOP ON TIME MACHINES

As aging Baby Boomers welcome in another New Year, we swivel between looking back and looking forward.
Haven't we all imagined time machines?
What would you do with one?

GOING BACK
What life-event would you re-visit?
Are there items you would retrieve and bring to your current life?
Would you never leave a particular place, year, or age?

GOING FORWARD
How far forward would you go?
What do you imagine seeing?
What would you bring from your current life into your future one?

NOTE
Although I am excited about the invention of time machines, I really, really am eager for teleportation. Beam me up!

AGING BABY BOOMERS EXPLAIN MEMORY LAPSES

Aging Baby Boomers explain ... ahem ... excuse ... memory lapses in a variety of ways. Our reasons for getting distracted, losing focus, not concentrating, and forgetting to pay attention, include:
~ overloaded schedules
~ lack of sleep
~ boring conversatins, books, movies, et al

et cetera, et cetera, et cetera ...

One optimistic explanation for boomers' memory lapses: Addled memories are caused by years of accumulated knowledge clogging older brains; there is no room left.
Agree or disagree?

NOTE
Here's another explanation: Despite muddled memories, aging brains see life's big picture --- what is truly valuable and what is merely trivial. It is purported this recognition brings Baby Boomers tranquility.
Are you feeling tranquil?

AGING BABY BOOMERS HAVE MEMORY LAPSES

During bouts of nostalgia, Baby Boomers clearly remember long-ago people, places, and events. Yet in the here-and-now, we cannot always remember what we were just talking about or where we put our keys.
Boomers can't decide whether this is a cosmic joke, another sign of aging, or both.

Guess how many times a day Baby Boomers ask themselves ----
Where: Where did I put my keys, phone, glasses, must-have document? Grrrrr!
Why: Why did I omit essential details or neglect to ask crucial questions during an important meeting? Groan!
What: What did my friend tell me? I forgot to concentrate. Oops!
How: How will I introduce my partner to the person seated next to me, at the party? I cannot recall her name. Awkward!

et cetera, et cetera, et cetera ...

Depending on the situation, Baby Boomers react to memory blunders with frustration, annoyance, mortification, and/or alarm. The best reactions happen when we commiserate with fellow boomers and find humor in shared tales of muddled memory.
Laugh, laugh, and laugh some more.

On the other hand, there are circumstances that cause boomers to let rip a string of nasty, down-and-dirty zingers.
Haven't we all been there?

NOTE
This post references typical age-related memory lapses. It is beyond the scope of Baby Boomer Memos to address dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

DO AGING BABY BOOMERS WANT LIFE DO-OVERS?

Baby Boomers have been told that Life Reviews are part of aging. What we have not been told is where to find magic rewind buttons and enchanted wands to re-do/erase portions of our pasts.

Boomers are traveling the hills and valleys of our memory highways and reviewing where we've been, what we've done, and who has accompanied us along the way - often groaning:
'If only I ...'
'Why did I ...'
'What was I thinking when ...'
et cetera, et cetera, et cetera ...

The simple answer: When we were younger, most Baby Boomers did not envision how our choices would impact us decades later. (A hearty round of applause to those who did.)

NOTE
The good news: Life-lessons learned from foolish mistakes, missed opportunities, and negative experiences supposedly bring aging boomers the gift of wisdom. Has yours arrived yet?

AGING BABY BOOMERS REGRET WASTED TIME

Looking Back: Aging Baby Boomers regret all the time that was spent(wasted) doing things we did not want to do, among people we did not want to be with. Sigh!

Looking Forward: Boomers realize there is more time behind us than in front. Harsh! ... but true.

Looking In The Present: Boomers concede that time cannot be held back, saved, reversed, or stopped. Gasp!

Looking At Reality: Time is a priceless commodity that must be protected, spent wisely, and never again wasted.

NOTES
~ Become selective in how you spend time (activities) and with whom (relationships). Each will dwindle to a precious few.
~ Quit the notorious time-waster of dwelling on past regrets and disappointments.     Grand Prize Winner.

AGING BABY BOOMERS SAY 'NO' & 'YES'

When aging Baby Boomers acknowledge that Mother Nature is squeezing in and Father Time is pressing on, we are ready to receive two wonderful 'getting old' gifts.

1) The first gift gives us the ability to say 'No' to what we do not want to do, and to people we do not want to be with.
How liberating!

Supposedly, boomers cannot and do not say 'No' to everything and everybody.
Or ... can we, do we?

2) The second gift emboldens aging Baby Boomers to say 'Yes' to what we want to do, and to people we want to be with.
Because, let's face it: 'If not now, when?'

THE AGING BABY BOOMER ATTITUDE

Naturally, Baby Boomers have various attitudes about aging.
What is yours?

PUSHY BOOMERS
These boomers push the truth away by singing: 'Age is just a number, age is just a number, la,la,la ...'
If only this worked.

SURPRISED BOOMERS
They are often bewildered, sometimes stunned, and rarely pleased with getting older.
In numbed panic, these boomers repeatedly ask,
'How did I get here?' Duh!

INDIGNANT BOOMERS
These boomers view signs of aging as opponents to beat down. They are recruiting members for the rock band, Rage Against Aging. Want to join?
Indignant boomers ask, 'How could this happen to me?' Double Duh!!

DEEP DENIAL BOOMERS
They contend that if aging (and being old) is not acknowledged, spoken about, or admitted to, it will go away. When confronted with the effects of aging, i.e. physical, mental, and emotional changes, et cetera these boomers insist, 'This is not who I am.'
Ummm ... then who are you?

GRATEFUL BOOMERS
These boomers appreciate the gift of aging and celebrate longevity.
Can you? Will You?

NOTE
As you probably know, a grateful attitude brings the most joy and the least angst.
Triple Duh!!!

'THE PERFECT AGE' FOR AGING BABY BOOMERS

How do you respond to: What is the best thing about being your age?
Is that silence I hear?

Next question: What is the perfect age?

When most Baby Boomers turn back the clock to the perfect age we usually stop at the presumed perfect physical age - 20ish.
Boomers fondly remember our twenties as the prime of 'beauty' and 'physical strength.'

Boomer women report if it were possible to retrieve their younger bodies, they would flaunt them by wearing bikinis and high heels, 24/7.

Boomer men report they would go shirtless in order to show off their toned muscles and flat stomachs. Plus, they would wear their hair long and flowing. (Boomer men miss their hair.)

Here's the interesting follow-up
When these same boomers remember their youthful poor judgement and foolish mistakes, they pause. On second thought, the majority is reluctant to trade aging wisdom, self-awareness, and confidence for younger, albeit, beautiful bodies.
Would you?

NOTES
As we all know, age does not guarantee an end to poor judgement and foolish mistakes.
And, young people can be wise, self-aware, and confident.
I was not.
Were you?

AGING BABY BOOMERS HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS

Of course, Baby Boomers are happy to still be alive after 50ish to 70ish years. Hooray for us.

Yet as each new birthday rolls around, many of us are convinced we cannot be as old as we are because:
~ The number of candles on our birthday cakes does not reflect how we feel.
~ Boomers are not ready to be this old.
~ We thought it would take longer to get to our current ages.
And,
~ Old got here so fast. Too fast.

NOTE
There are approximately 75 million Baby Boomers in the U.S. and hundreds of millions around the world. Despite being old, quite a few continue to make our presence known and refuse to go quietly. Yay!

AGING BABY BOOMERS REACT TO OLD

Have you noticed the word old provokes reactions, from mild shudders to fierce outrage?
Do you shudder? Are you outraged?

A few Baby Boomers take their outrage to the extreme. They form a special unit of The Word Police. Their mission is to erase, preferably ban, old from common usage - as if it is an offensive insult. Seriously.

In my opinion, The Word Police perpetuate the old stigma.

Boomers, why not uphold our rebellious legacy by shattering the traditional stigma of old?
How?
By redefining old, boomerlicious-style.

NOTE
It is up to us to redefine old, beginning with these three steps.
~ Take ownership of old - Use the word
~ Repudiate the stigma of old - Flaunt it
~ Celebrate old - It is the result of living a long life

AGING BABY BOOMERS REDEFINE OLD

Have you heard silly comments about Baby Boomers, such as:
We are:
~ old-school
~ irrelevant
~ obsolete
et cetera, et cetera, et cetera

Have you seen traditional images of old people, such as:
They:
~ sit in rocking chairs
~ wear frumpy clothes
~ grumble, fumble, stumble, and mumble

Have you responded:
~ no, No, NO

NOTE
It is not surprising that boomers do not perceive ourselves as sedentary, over-hill folks with outdated world-views, whose time has passed.
After all, we are The Baby Boomers!!!
We're redefining old, boomer-style.
I call it being Boomerlicious.

DO BABY BOOMERS NEED A NEW IDENTITY

Now that Baby Boomers are old, some boomers say it is ridiculous to be called baby ... anything.
But, there are others who have nostalgic fondness for our group identity.

Is it time for a name change?
Frankly, most of us do not care. However, as long as there seems to be a push to come up with a new label, why not add our voices.

~ A few boomers are trying out 'Mature Boomers'.
In my opinion, it is doubtful the majority of boomers will adopt this terminology - for obvious reasons.

~ What about 'Senior Boomers'?
I confess. Merely writing Senior Boomers requires effort. To prepare, I take deep calming breaths, chant soothing affirmations, but still gasp in horror as I struggle to utter the word 'Senior'.

~ Baby Boomers may cringe at 'Aging Boomers', yet many reluctantly accept it as tolerable.
Therefore, you will see Aging Boomers throughout Baby Boomer Memos - until someone comes up with a better choice.

Any ideas?

NOTE
BACK TO THE BEGINNING
As you probably know, The Baby Boom describes post WW11 elevated U.S. birth rates. (Rates also increased in other countries.)
It did not take much originality to anoint our generation: Baby Boomers.

To address the 18-year duration of the birth spike, from 1946 to 1964, I separate Baby Boomers into three sub-groups: First-wave, Midpoint, and Last-Wave.

BABY BOOMERS ARE (GASP!) OLD AND GETTING OLDER

Baby Boomers are OLD and getting OLDER!!!

Shhhh ...
Maybe, just maybe, if boomers do not write, speak, or think the word old (and avoid mirrors), we can pretend to be eternally young.

Perhaps ...
Very, very politely, we can ask Mother Nature and Father Time to grant us old exemptions. After all, The Baby Boomers are SPECIAL. Right?

Or ...
Boomers can age gracefully.
Hahahaha.
Since when are we known for being graceful?

One last idea ...
What if we let our aging boomer-flags fly and own old?
How?
By redefining old in our inimitable Baby Boomer style.
I call it being Boomerlicious.

NOTE
Here we are growing old together. Is it comforting to know there are millions of us sharing this - whatever this is?
